The Practice Yoga is about re-discovering yourself on a soul level. Most of us limit ourselves to the perception that we are just mind and body. In truth, we are atman (soul); eternal, infinite, and filled with everlasting joy. The journey begins by synchronizing breath and movement (vinyasa flow.) The intention of vinyasa is not to stand on one's head or get rock hard abs, it is to find stillness. Yoga teaches us that although we can't control the sensations in the body, we can control how we react to those sensations. We can choose to react with non-reactivity, cultivating peace, calm, and equanimity of mind. By learning how to do this in our asana practice, we can do the same in all of life's challenging situations. The rollercoaster ride of life beings to smooth out and we find more happiness and joy in our lives. On a deeper level, as one's mind stills, the asana practice prepares us for meditation. Here, one can experience the ultimate bliss of Samadhi. Beyond all pleasures of the outside world, one takes root in that which is permanent and unchanging; his or her own soul. That which was perceived as being separate becomes one; the formless source having taken form in all of creation. The journey towards this state of being requires love, devotion, surrender, and a never ending willingness to unfold into one's true self. For those who find this all a bit overwhelming -- no worries! In the beginning, yoga is simply about enjoying the breath, enjoying the body, and walking out feeling better than you did when you walked in. And let's face it, a nicer looking butt never hurt anyone! I welcome you to your practice and look forward to seeing you in class. |
